Caribbean Broadcast Media Leaders Summit Held May 8-10, 2006 in Bridgetown Barbados
On May 8-10, 2006, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation and the Kaiser Family Foundation hosted the first-ever Caribbean Broadcast Media Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS in Bridgetown, Barbados. The Summit was born out of the Global Media AIDS Initiative (GMAI), which was launched in January 2004 to harness the power of mass media to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, curb the spread of new HIV infection, and fight stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The Caribbean Summit brought together more than 30 media executives representing over 20 different countries across the region.
As has been the case with previous such gatherings of media executives – organized by the Kaiser Family Foundation and local partners in Russia, India, South Africa and the United States – the Caribbean Broadcast Media Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS aimed to heighten awareness among regional broadcasters and lead to the establishment of new, coordinated initiatives that deliver lifesaving messages to target audiences. Participants signed a joint Declaration that outlined their commitments and the main objectives for post-Summit action.
