ST. MAARTEN

St. Maarten Cable TV

In 1987, a U.S. Virgin Islands based businessman, along with a number of local and foreign investors, launched St. Maarten Cable TV. Originally offering some 12 channels, St. Maarten subscribers enthusiastically greeted the arrival of Cable TV, which signaled the beginning of varied quality entertainment, in the comfort of one's home. A public access channel was added to the line-up of channels in 1988, providing local TV producers with the opportunity to showcase programming with a local content. Within a decade of operation, St. Maarten Cable TV continued diversifying programming offered via Cable TV, in recognition of the island’s different ethnic groups. St. Maarten Cable TV today boasts some 44 channels, including pay per view channels.

Never was the impact of the company's presence felt so clearly than after the passing of Hurricane Luis in September 1995, when cable TV service was interrupted, following widespread destruction of the company's outside plant. An ambitious restoration effort was initiated in order to meet subscribers’ demands for a return to cable TV service, at the same time as basic services such as water and electricity were being restored.

Immediately prior to that period, local subscribers had remained glued to their TV sets, awaiting word on the arrival of the hurricane. The practice continues today, with the arrival of each hurricane season, with St. Maarten regularly turning to the Weather Channel for current information. It is that kind of service that has converted St. Maarten Cable TV into one of the island's most appreciated companies.
