Caribbean Broadcast Media Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS: Highlights

The summit was held at the Hilton Barbados Hotel at Needham's Point in St. Michael, Barbados Monday May 8-Wednesday May 10.

MONDAY, MAY 8 – HIV/AIDS IN THE CARIBBEAN

  • Welcome / Opening Comments – Dr. Allyson Leacock, General Manager, Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation
    • Dr. Allyson Leacock, General Manager of the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Barbados, welcomed the participants to the first Caribbean Broadcast Media Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS. She explained that the Summit would examine critical issues in the region and stressed that it was important to work together as a unit across the region and to ensure awareness of facts and figures, as well as sensitivities and sensibilities.

  • Keynote Remarks - Dr. Carol Jacobs, Chair of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and Chair of the National HIV/AIDS Commission
    • Dr. Jacobs addressed the participants at lunch on the second day of the Summit. Dr. Jacobs looked at the issue of HIV/AIDS from a Barbadian and Caribbean perspective, examined the work that the Global Fund was doing, and challenged the media to see themselves as agents of change.
